Like he said, if you look at the opto through the LCD on a video camera or digital still, it will show you the light. Pretty much everyone has one of those now.

How exactly did you determine that? Most of the time you're not going to see a spark or hear a pop. It discharges without visible results.

With that desc it could have been anything but my money is on the flyback transformer.

Sounds to me like a cracked solder joint somewhere in that logic circuit. With all else failing I'd pull the driver board and reflow all solder joints in the circuit for those mechs. Start with the connector header on the driver board and go all the way backwards.

I have repaired a lot of monitors. When in doubt replace them all. Cap kits are meant for monitors inside of 7-8 years, IMO. Once you get past that point every cap in the chassis is suspect.
