pillarboxing in the OS for widescreen monitors

This is mostly a note for myself to try when I get my NuCore setup, but I thought I'd mention it here rather than just emailing it to myself in case it helps anyone else. The following command (typed in a terminal window in Ubuntu) should fix the problem with the image getting stretched on a widescreen monitor without having to mess with the monitor's positioning settings:

xrandr --output VGA1 --set "scaling mode" "Full aspect"

If that doesn't work then there may be a better --set option that gives more precise control over the aspect ratio, but I'm having trouble finding documentation for this function...

It doesn't support the framebuffer like it should. Ubuntu, or the linux community, seem to be abandoning a lot of the old screen positioning apps. Believe me we tried them all (I think.)

aww, that's too bad. Oh well, I should be putting in my order this week or next and look forward to banging my head against it and trying to find a software solution! :)
