Firefox seems to corrupt once Nucore is installed

Two problems encountered during installation.

First issue - successfully put my system together and installed Ubuntu. The Firefox icon at the top of the desktop displays ok at this stage. Once the Nucore software from the disc is installed, the Firefox icon disappears and is replaced with a black square. Hover the mouse pointer over the icon and it still knows its Firefox by the description bubble that appears. However when trying to run Firefox I get the following error message displayed in an error box: -

ERROR
Could not launch application failed to execute child process "firefox" (no such file or directory).

For some strange reason this forum would not allow me to attach the installation log file or a txt file contain the installation log contents. So I have cut & pasted the info at the bottom of this message.

I managed to correct the Firefox problem by using the application upgrade option within Ubuntu and selecting to upgrade Firefox only. Once the upgrade was completed, the rest of installation as per the manual went smoothly. I have one more system to put together and install, if an explanation and remedy could be provided, I would much appreciate it.

Second issue - how do you access the Ubuntu desktop again after the installation/reboot?? When the system is started or rebooted, the emulator (Nucore) boots automatically. Press F1 and it dumps out to what I think is a Linux command screen similar to DOS (sorry first time experience with Linux, don't know any better). From here how do I access the Ubuntu desktop again?? If I type in the Nucore user and password it fails to load. I can supply the info displayed on the screen if that helps?

Thanks again for making this system available for all Pinball 2000 fans!

The firefox issue is a strange one. It's never happened to me but it hs happened to a beta tester. It's caused by ubuntu's update procedure. Like you mentioned it can be easily fixed by either installing firefox or upgrading. To get back into the GDM (windows) enter root for username and nucore for the password. Once you're logged in type:

/etc/init.d/gdm start

That will start x windows.

Thanks for the info Chuck.

I built my second system today and ran the installation software, same thing occurred again. After upgrading the Firefox software I was able to successfully complete the installation of the software on both systems.

I documented my efforts here... http://aussiepinball.com/index.php?topic=5622.0

Installed Nucore today, and i got the same problem with firefox after installation.
Starting Ubuntu from cd-rom, ?visitor?-user, won't work, since you don't have the permission to create or change anything on the hd.

This is how i fixed it;
- Download the .tar file on another pc, copy it on a USB.
- Boot Nucore, press F1, put; /etc/init.d/gdm start in command, press enter. User name; root, pass; nucore.
- connect USB to pc
- start from page 26 in the manual, you will find the "downloaded" file on the USB-drive.

! Note;
After download, it seems that the Nucore.tar.tar contains another compressed file; Nucore.tar, this is the file you need to copy in Ubuntu and extract!

(super easy, but for people who don't got any pc-skills, and follow the guide, it's a usefull help)
