Right Ramp and Shooter lane question

I have owned my RFM for about 3 months now. A couple of things I don't get.
1. The right ramp has a gate that comes up. Once you hit it is goes down opening the ramp. I can't figure out why or when it goes up. It is pretty hard to see when it is up to begin with. Are there any lights that show whether or not the ramp is open or closed?
2. The lights on the shooter lanes (by flippers and drain). What does these do when all the lights are lit? The game makes a noise. Only thing I notice is the score going up slightly when they are all lit.
